Lopes, 25, laughed and smiled as she hugged runner-up Miss Ukraine Olesia Stefanko, then felt a crown placed carefully on her head at the pageant held in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Earlier in the contest, Lopes had been asked what she might change about her physical characteristics if she could, but Lopes said she was satisfied with who she was.
"I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty," she told the judges and the audience. "I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family, and I plan to follow those through the rest of my life."
Lopes takes her place as the winner of the 60th annual Miss Universe pageant.
It is an annual event watched by millions of people around the world on TV who cheer for the young women competing in categories ranging from swimsuits to evening gowns. They also must answer the critical question that tells the judges a bit about them.
Lopes had worn a bright bikini, then paraded around the stage with poise in a form-fitting evening gown colored in gold and silver sequins and feathers.
In fan voting, Lopes tallied only a 3.6 score for the swimsuit but earned a 7.2 for her evening gown. Fan voting, however, did not count in the final tallies from nine judges.
The panelists, who ranged from race car driver Helio Castroneves to actress Vivica A. Fox and journalist Connie Chung, scored the women on each contest, narrowing from a group of 16 down to a final five that included women from China, the Philippines and the home country, Brazil. In all, 89 women competed for the title.
The show was hosted by U.S. television personalities Andy Cohen and Natalie Morales.

Guys honestly do u know how much base and foundation these gori models put on their faces, atleast ms angola had less base than the others, every race deserves a chance to be glorified and appreciated. and she was the best looking dark brownie for sure!
why she looks so unattractive even miss srilanka was more beutiful than her
I want to marry Ms. Brazil
India also sent their girl wonder where she ended up.. :P
Kali ko bunna diya.. hahaha.. no seriously she is good looking. Perhaps not the best when compared to Miss Ukraine but this competition does not focus on beauty only.
I agree, the judges were drunk. The whole idea of beauty contest is ridiculous, Every man is womanizer to core, how is possible to chose only one pretty woman? Brainy pretty woman? I don't think that beauty or brain has anything to do as a combination and in my humble opinion stupidity is a quality and if its coupled with beauty then its a combo.. I am sorry if my comment hurt anyone's feeling.
That caption is wrong I think. Why the runner-up would set her crown? It is Miss Universe 2010 setting the crown of Miss Universe 2011 on the head of Miss Angola. Miss Ukraine is wearing a very different gown, all together. One cannot switch garments in a matter of minutes.

Don't be upset Ms Angola by reading the comments. In a region where not only women but also men use " Fair and Lovely " cream for fair complexion, you will never have a chance of being appreciated. So just enjoy your day......... If Obama can be a President of United States of America, then sure you deserved to be Miss Universe ! When will we learn?????
I am sorry for being racist but miss ukraine was way way better ..even that panama one was good.
Miss Angola was the most beautiful amongst all the contestants. And to bring to the kind notice of my fellow Pakistanis, Miss Universe is not just about physical beauty. Its a combination of beauty and brains. For once, plz come out of ur "Fair is beautiful" concept and give crediot where its due. In any case we abhor women who have a mind of their own and can take their own decisions. Hence Miss Angola winning the Miss Universe crown won't go down with most of Pakistani Males.
I absolutely love dusky/dark complexioned women and find them more attractive and appealing than the fair maidens everyone else keeps drooling over.
@M Ali Khan ...seriously dude ...m trying to grow up ...you wdnt believe my head is growing out of my hair...:P
We are a country that is obsessed with skin-fairness creams to the extent that we discriminate over colour. Grow up. Miss Angola is GORGEOUS!
On one hand we do not stop talking about the equality in Islam and that how our prophet PBUH, has loved Bilal Habshi and his voice. On the other hand some of us still are more racist than the white people. God has gifted blacks of great beauty, talent and agility. Look at all the top athletes and players in the world. The sad irony is "we the colored people discriminate against colored people"! No wonder our future is so very uncertain to say the least.
Good looking woman. Ridiculous contest.
Black people can be good looking, get over it. The whole "fair is beautiful" idea that is still so prevalent in the subcontinent is an indicator of the complex that the British left us with, which is ridiculous because these days white people want to have skin tone like us (tanned)!
@Naveed @Omar there is a name for guys like you. we call them RACISTS. grow up for God's sake.
These guys don't know anything nor have ever seen anything. Miss Angola was the most beautiful of them all, simply amazing!
Most of my fellow Pakistanis are such racists that they would never consider a black person (Habshi) beautiful.
Am I drunk? :\
judges must be high!
