KARA’s Seungyeon reflects on past obsession with thinness in SBS documentary
In an upcoming SBS documentary titled 'SBS Special: Bodymentary – Confessions About Weight', KARA’s Seungyeon shares a raw account of her past obsession with maintaining an excessively thin body. The special, airing on December 8, features five iconic female figures from different eras, including Seungyeon, who delve into their struggles with body image and the pressures of the entertainment industry.
Seungyeon, known for her "doll-like" appearance and KARA’s global success with hits like "Mister," reveals how the intense standards of the idol industry impacted her. "Even a tiny bit of a stomach was unacceptable," she recalls. At her heaviest, she weighed just 46 kg (101.2 lbs), but she lost an additional 4 kg (8.8 lbs) in pursuit of the “perfect” body. However, this obsession came at a cost: she fainted from the extreme dieting.
The documentary also features other K-pop stars, including Soyou, Jeon Hyo Sung, and Hwa Sa, who each share their own personal journeys. For Seungyeon, this documentary is a chance to warn others about the dangers of the toxic beauty standards in the industry.
As part of the program, these women reflect on how they once sacrificed their well-being to meet unattainable beauty standards and question the true cost of perfection. The show aims to spark a conversation about the pressures of body image in the entertainment world, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own relationship with self-image.
