Superman & Lois showrunners discuss series finale and Superman's conclusion

The Superman & Lois series wrapped up its final chapter with a poignant and action-packed episode that not only closed the book on the show’s central villain, Lex Luthor, but also provided a touching and complete ending for Superman (Tyler Hoechlin). The finale saw Clark Kent battling both Luthor and the formidable Doomsday, with help from his sons, Jordan (Alexander Garfin) and Jonathan (Michael Bishop). Together, they prevent Superman's death and defeat Doomsday by sending the creature into the sun.

In an interview with Deadline, showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher shared their vision for Season 4 and the series finale, highlighting their intention to give Superman a definitive conclusion. Rather than leaving the story open-ended, they chose to depict the entirety of Clark and Lois Lane’s (Elizabeth Tulloch) life, including their aging process. Clark, who had received a heart transplant earlier in the season, retires from his superhero duties, focusing instead on improving his community. The story also shows his sons growing up and starting families of their own.

Despite Lois’ battle with recurring cancer, which leads to her eventual passing, the finale culminates with Clark spending his final years with a dog before peacefully passing away, reunited with Lois in the afterlife. Helbing and Fletcher emphasized that this approach, which shows Superman’s mortality and human side, was a rare and powerful take on the iconic hero. The showrunners expressed their satisfaction with being able to wrap up the series in a way that felt genuine, though they acknowledged there were other storylines they wished had been included, such as exploring Superman’s brother Tal-Rho further.

The finale aims to resonate with viewers long after the credits roll, leaving a lasting message of hope, family, and the value of life.
