JCP to decide on additional judges for HCs
The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has scheduled a key meeting for December 6 to discuss the appointment of 21 additional judges for the Sindh High Court (SHC) and the Peshawar High Court (PHC).
Out of these, 12 names have been proposed for the SHC and nine for the PHC.
The process of nominating judges for the superior judiciary has begun, with the names for consideration now made public. For the Sindh High Court, the proposed candidates include individuals with diverse professional backgrounds, such as experienced judges and lawyers.
Similarly, for the Peshawar High Court, the list comprises three district and session judges and six lawyers with notable legal expertise. These nominees reflect a mix of judicial and legal acumen aimed at strengthening the judiciary in the province.
The JCP's deliberations will focus on assessing the qualifications and capabilities of these candidates to ensure that the appointments meet the standards required for the higher judiciary.
It is pertinent to note that a meeting of the JCP, constituted under the 26th Constitutional Amendment, was convened at the Supreme Court on Monday.
Presided over by CJP Justice Yahya Afridi, who also chairs the commission, the session focused on a single-point agenda: the formation of constitutional benches within the SHC.
After an in-depth and thoughtful discussion, the commission approved the formation of constitutional benches in the SHC. The proposal received majority support, with 11 members in favour and four against, approving the names of judges for a two-month term.
