Heavy vehicles plying on Mehran Highway despite ban
Movement of heavy transport vehicles on Mehran Highway, despite a ban, has caused a rise in the numbers of road accidents on the stretch between Sakrand and Qazi Ahmed.
The locals have blamed Shaheed Benazirabad police for allowing heavy vehicles to ply on the Mehran Highway after taking bribes from truckers.
The police personnel are diverting the vehicles en-route from Karachi to Punjab on the National Highway from Qazi Ahmed and Sakrand towards the Mehran Highway after taking hefty bribes.
Since the Mehran Highway was a single carriage road, accidents occur daily due to heavy vehicles leading to loss of many precious lives.
On the other hand, the movement of heavy vehicles has severely damaged roads like the Qazi Ahmed-Nawabshah and the Sakrand-Nawabshah road. The movement of trailers weighing up to 120 tons has formed potholes on these roads, while large potholes have been formed on the Mehran Highway itself.
Residents have appealed to the Inspector General (IG) of Sindh to take immediate action to enforce the ban on heavy vehicles on the Mehran Highway to mitigate road accidents and ensure safety.
