Remote Chitral village connects to rest of district

The residents of Wasum village in Yarkhoon valley of Upper Chitral district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have said that with the completion of the construction work on the jeep-able bridge over the stream, the village of 270 households will remain connected with the rest of the valley throughout the year.

The village surrounded by insurmountable lofty mountain on three sides used to remain cut off during the three months of summer season when the pedestrian makeshift bridge was washed away by the high flood in the stream triggered by melting glaciers.

Talking to the local media, the local elders Anwar Khan, Sher Ahmed, Aziz Wali, Safeer Khan and others said that the villagers suffered badly during the three months of summer as they faced shortage of essential commodities of daily life which could not be replenished.

They said that Aga Khan Rural Support Programme relieved them of the perennial issue by providing the facility under its Central Asian Poverty Programme while it was beyond the financial capacity of the local community to construct it on self-help basis.

The residents said that the patients and the injured could not be shifted to the main road during the three months of summer and the school going children also suffered during this period.

They added that for the last two years, the villagers have started using the farming machineries including tractors.
