HBO has defended J.K. Rowling’s involvement in the highly anticipated Harry Potter TV series despite ongoing backlash over her views on transgender issues. During a press event, HBO chief Casey Bloys addressed her role, confirming that Rowling is “very, very involved in the process selecting the writer and the director.” He added that her public statements have “not affected the casting or hiring of writers or production staff.”

In a statement to Variety, HBO emphasized the author’s contributions to the franchise, noting, “We have been working with J.K. Rowling and in the Harry Potter business for over 20 years. Her contribution has been invaluable.” The studio further stated, “We are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter — the heartwarming books that speak to the power of friendship, resolve, and acceptance. J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views.”

The series will span seven seasons, each dedicated to one of Rowling’s novels, and aims to include details omitted from the original films. Casting has begun, with open calls for children in the U.K. and Ireland to portray Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. The production team includes Succession’s Francesca Gardiner as showrunner and Mark Mylod as director of multiple episodes.

Rowling’s continued association with the project has divided fans, with some struggling to reconcile their love for the franchise with her controversial views on transgender issues. Nevertheless, HBO remains focused on bringing the beloved story to new audiences worldwide.
