Charli XCX’s surprise performance in New York City's Times Square on Nov. 18, 2024, has sparked criticism due to health concerns. The singer, who recently released her album Brat, announced the show just 30 minutes before its start, thrilling fans. However, visuals during her performance, including strobing black-and-white text reading "PARTY GIRL," drew backlash online for potentially posing a risk to individuals with photosensitive epilepsy.

Social media erupted with mixed reactions after fans shared clips of the event. One fan commented, “Not to be the friend that’s too woke, but huge flashing lights in a public space with no warning isn’t a good idea maybe.” Another pointed out the difference between typical Times Square advertising screens and the strobing lights, writing, “There’s a difference between big screens showing ads and big screens showing flashing lights.”

Supporters of Charli XCX noted that Times Square already features flashing advertisements, but critics disagreed, with one saying, “Times Square doesn’t have strobing lights like THIS though.” Others highlighted the absence of any epilepsy warnings, with comments such as, “That’s super disturbing actually,” and “Massive strobe effects in a public place without prior warning is a REALLY dangerous and irresponsible thing to do.”

At the time of writing, Charli XCX has not addressed the backlash. While the performance excited many fans, the health concerns raised have added controversy to the singer’s latest appearance.
