Dua Lipa named the Trevor Project’s mental health champion of the year
Dua Lipa has been named The Trevor Project’s Mental Health Champion of the Year, recognizing her efforts to support LGBTQ+ mental health and raise awareness for the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth. The Trevor Project, a leading suicide prevention organization for LGBTQ+ youth in the U.S. and Mexico, cited her outspoken support for LGBTQ+ rights and her openness about her own mental health journey as key reasons for the honor.
In a heartfelt statement, Dua Lipa shared her gratitude for the recognition: “The LGBTQ+ community has been my biggest champion since the start of my career, and I will continue to fight to make sure your voices are heard and your rights are protected.” Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project, praised Lipa as a role model for allies, noting her ability to amplify critical issues like access to competent mental health care for LGBTQ+ youth.
The award comes as The Trevor Project reports a surge in crisis service demand following the recent U.S. election and ongoing anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Their 2024 survey revealed that 39% of LGBTQ+ youth seriously considered suicide in the past year, with the figure rising to 46% among transgender and nonbinary youth.
Dua Lipa continues to advocate for change, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for LGBTQ+ youth. Meanwhile, fans can look forward to her October 2024 Royal Albert Hall performance, featuring Elton John and a 43-piece orchestra, which will air on ITV later this year.
With her commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and mental health, Dua Lipa sets a powerful example of how public figures can drive positive change for marginalized communities.
