Donald Trump has chosen Linda McMahon, former WWE CEO and co-chair of his transition team, as the education secretary for his second term. McMahon, 76, previously served as head of the Small Business Administration and led the America First Action PAC, demonstrating her strong loyalty to Trump’s vision. Her nomination underscores Trump’s focus on school choice, as he promises to “send education back to the states” and expand school choice nationwide.

McMahon’s experience in education includes a brief stint on Connecticut’s Board of Education, where she advocated for charter schools and increased competition. However, critics highlight her limited experience in education policy compared to her extensive business background. McMahon’s tenure in the SBA faced criticism for removing resources for LGBTQ+ business owners, a controversy that may follow her into this new role.

Trump’s education policies aim to dismantle the Department of Education and cut federal funding to schools teaching critical race theory or promoting transgender inclusion. McMahon’s nomination has sparked backlash from public education advocates like NEA President Becky Pringle, who called Trump’s proposals “harmful” and urged the Senate to reject her nomination.

Proponents like Keri Rodrigues of the National Parents Union expressed optimism, urging McMahon to focus on addressing learning loss and protecting the rights of students with special needs. With a Republican-controlled Senate, McMahon is likely to clear the confirmation process, paving the way for Trump’s education agenda in his second term.

McMahon’s legacy in both business and education will be closely scrutinized as she tackles key issues, including federal funding cuts, school choice expansion, and controversial cultural policies in education.
