Florence Pugh opens up about freezing her eggs after PCOS and endometriosis diagnosis
Florence Pugh has opened up about her decision to freeze her eggs at 27 after being diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis, two conditions that can significantly impact fertility. Speaking on Dear Media’s SHE MD podcast, hosted by Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi and Mary Alice Haney, Pugh described the experience as a “mind-boggling realization” that pushed her to act quickly to preserve her fertility.
“I had this sudden feeling that I should go and get everything checked,” the We Live in Time star shared. After a routine egg count, Pugh’s doctor diagnosed her with PCOS and endometriosis, suggesting egg freezing. “My family are baby-making machines, so it was shocking to learn that I needed to take action early,” Pugh explained.
Polycystic ovary syndrome is the leading cause of infertility in women, with symptoms like irregular periods, acne, weight gain, and excessive hair growth. Endometriosis, which causes uterine-like tissue to grow in abnormal areas, can lead to severe pelvic pain and fertility issues, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Pugh emphasized the importance of educating young women about these conditions and their impact on fertility. “If you dream of being a mum one day, these things are crucial to know,” the Oppenheimer actress said, calling for better awareness in schools. She also reflected on her symptoms, which included acne and weight fluctuations, adding, “I thought they were just part of being a woman.”
Pugh’s story highlights the significance of proactive health checks and discussions about fertility. New episodes of SHE MD podcast, where Pugh’s interview aired, are released every Thursday.
