Roger Federer pens tribute to Rafael Nadal ahead of his final tournament

Roger Federer has paid an emotional tribute to Rafael Nadal, who is set to retire after the 2024 Davis Cup Finals. Sharing his sentiments on Instagram, Federer, 42, reflected on their storied rivalry and friendship ahead of Nadal’s final tournament, which began on Nov. 19 in Malaga, Spain.

“Vamos, Rafa! As you get ready to graduate from tennis, I've got a few things to share before I maybe get emotional,” Federer wrote, expressing admiration for Nadal's relentless drive and unique rituals that redefined tennis excellence. “You beat me — a lot. More than I managed to beat you. You made me reimagine my game,” Federer added, praising Nadal’s unmatched intensity.
 

Federer congratulated Nadal on his "incredible run," acknowledging the 22-time Grand Slam champion's influence on tennis and Spain's pride in his achievements. Federer also highlighted the close bond their families share, mentioning that his children trained at Nadal's academies.

Nadal, 38, announced his retirement on Oct. 10, sharing the news in a heartfelt video on X (formerly Twitter). Reflecting on his career, Nadal said, “It has been some difficult years, especially these last two... But everything has a beginning and an end.” Nadal thanked the tennis community and rivals like Federer and Novak Djokovic for shaping his journey.

Federer and Nadal faced each other over 40 times, developing a profound camaraderie. Their rivalry defined an era, with iconic matches like their 2008 Wimbledon final. As Federer cheers for his friend’s next chapter, Nadal bids farewell after an illustrious career that has left an indelible mark on the tennis world.
