Denmark, WASA to launch wastewater treatment initiative

Plant expected to boost pollution control efforts

JARANWALA:

Danish Ambassador Jakob Linulf has emphasised the challenges faced by developing countries in wastewater treatment, linking the lack of effective systems to environmental degradation and the acceleration of climate change

He expressed these views while speaking at a seminar organised by the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) on wastewater treatment on Tuesday.

The seminar, chaired by Director General Faisalabad Development Authority (FDA) Muhammad Asif Chaudhry, featured Danish Ambassador Jakob Linulf as the chief guest and Bente Schiller, Director of Investment at the Danish Sustainable Investment Fund (DSIF), as the guest of honour.

The Danish envoy highlighted the ongoing smog crisis in Pakistan and neighbouring countries as a consequence of unchecked air and environmental pollution, stressing the urgency of addressing these issues.

Ambassador Linulf underscored the significance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Project in Faisalabad, supported by DSIF and WASA, describing it as a critical initiative to combat pollution and mitigate its harmful effects on public health.

Speaking on behalf of DSIF, Bente Schiller praised the progress achieved in collaboration with WASA Faisalabad, announcing that contractors are expected to arrive in Faisalabad early next year to commence construction of the plant.

FDA Director General Muhammad Asif Chaudhry reaffirmed the strong bilateral ties between Denmark and Pakistan, applauding their collaboration on the mega wastewater treatment project.

He highlighted the positive working relationship between DANIDA and WASA, noting its potential to significantly reduce air and environmental pollution in Faisalabad. He stressed the importance of wastewater treatment and its long-term benefits for the region.
