The Punjab government has decided to reopen all schools across the province starting November 20, following an improvement in air quality.

The announcement comes after rains in the upper regions of the province helped reduce smog levels, resulting in a better air quality index (AQI).

Schools in major cities, including Lahore and Multan, had been closed on November 6 due to hazardous smog conditions, which were declared a “calamity” by the provincial authorities.

The closure was extended until November 24, but with recent improvements in air quality, the government has lifted the restrictions.

A statement from the provincial government highlighted that the AQI had improved due to rainfall, changes in wind patterns, and a decrease in smog intensity.

On Monday evening, the AQI stood at 179, categorised as “unhealthy,” but authorities are optimistic about further improvements in the coming days.

The reopening plan includes several precautionary measures: schools will not open before 8:45 am, and masks will be mandatory for both students and staff. Additionally, outdoor sports and co-curricular activities remain banned until further notice.

The Punjab Higher Education Department has also announced that all public and private universities and colleges will reopen from November 20, under the same guidelines.

University and college officials have been instructed to ensure compliance with the regulations set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
