Pindi to get pedestrian-friendly streets

The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) is taking decisive action to address the city's growing traffic congestion and air pollution, with a series of ambitious initiatives aimed at improving urban life.

According to RDA Director General Kinza Murtaza, the plan focuses on enhancing traffic flow, promoting sustainability, and creating a more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly environment.

Key measures include expanding pedestrian streets, developing additional parking facilities, and creating dedicated bike and motorcycle lanes along the busy Murree Road, from Katchery Chowk to Faizabad. The RDA is also pushing for the transformation of key bazaars into pedestrian-friendly zones to reduce traffic pressure and encourage greener transportation options.

"We aim to enhance the overall living standards of citizens by making the city more accessible, environmentally friendly, and safe," Murtaza stated. She also mentioned a comprehensive proposal to relocate the cattle market and transport hubs from GT Road to reduce congestion, which is currently under review by the Commissioner of Rawalpindi.

In addition to traffic improvements, the RDA is actively addressing Rawalpindi's smog problem. Murtaza confirmed a ban on new housing developments on agricultural land and tree-cutting restrictions to protect the city's green spaces. The Municipal Corporation has been tasked with removing encroachments along Murree Road and other key routes to further improve urban mobility.

The RDA is also cracking down on illegal housing schemes, with over 200 unapproved developments currently under investigation.
