Sindhiani Tehreek stages march

Sindhiani Tehreek on Sunday staged a protest march from Regal Chowk to Karachi Press Club against the government's plan to build more canals on the Indus River, corporate farming and oppression of women in the province.

The march culminated with a sit-in and a public jalsa outside the Karachi Press Club.

The Sindhi women organisation founded by Sindh's leftist ideologue Rasool Bux Palijo expressed strong reservations against transferring province's resources to the Centre during the 16-year rule of the Pakistan Peoples Party.

They said PPP caused irreparable damage to the collective interests of the province. They demanded fair distribution of Indus River water and emphasised cancellation of canal projects.

Protesters opposed the handing over of Sindh lands to multinational companies for corporate farming. The participants also demanded effective legislation to end discrimination and atrocities against women.

They demanded provision of schools, colleges and hostels for the promotion of women's education.

Sindh's women activists denounced the artificial scarcity of water in rural and urban areas and the encroachment on cultural heritage sites like Karoonjhar Hills. An appeal was also made to provide employment to the local youth of Sindh in the oil and gas fields in their areas.
