Balochi drama draws laurels

The alluring allusion: men chase worldly desires, fall to demise

In a dazzling display of theatrical brilliance, Balochi drama 'Wash Rang' or beautiful captivated audiences at the Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi's 21-day Awami Theatre Festival.

The play narrates story of a woman, Wash Rang, who is admired for her beauty. A man attracted to her, takes his father to her home with a marriage proposal. As the story unfolds, a mesmerising tale of desire, deception, and downfall ensues as overwhelmed by her beauty, the father becomes interested in tying knot with the girl himself. This sparks a dispute between the lovers which escalates to the police station.

In a surprising twist, the police officer also gets captivated by Wash Rang's beauty and expresses his desire to marry her. The case then goes in the court of a minister who declares Wash Rang his fiancée.

Consequently, a wealthy leader was approached to resolve the complexed issue. Awestruck by the woman's beauty, the leader does not hesitate declaring Wash Rang his long-lost fourth wife.

Meanwhile, Wash Rang proposes a run to settle the dispute, she will marry the man who catches her but the men's pursuit ends in tragedy as they fall into a well, chasing the woman. Wash Rang's words serve as a haunting reminder, "The beautiful world you pursue is beyond your reach." As the men plead for help, Wash Rang remains resolute, emphasising that their time for redemption has passed. She emphasised that they had the opportunity to improve themselves, but instead, they chose to pursue worldly desires. In the end, everyone in the well drowns, and Wash Rang disappears, concluding the play. The author masterfully employs personification, transforming worldly pleasures into a breathtakingly beautiful woman, Wash Rang, whose allure proves fatal.

The play, written and directed by Danish Baloch, with Wali Raees as assistant director, included Abeeha Pyari, Danish Baloch, Shakeel Murad, Zareen Askani, Javed Iqbal, Atta Gul, Atta Deedag, Waqas Baloch, Yaseen Baloch, Nadeem Maliri, and Lal Muhammad Askani as cast.
