Mark Rylance is reportedly being considered for the role of Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series adaptation.
According to sources, Warner Bros. Television has expressed interest but has yet to begin formal negotiations with the Academy Award-winning actor. Rylance, known for his roles in Bridge of Spies, Wolf Hall, and The Trial of the Chicago 7, is rumored to be on the casting wishlist as HBO seeks top-tier U.K. talent for the series’ adult characters. While Rylance’s reps did not comment, HBO emphasized that they will confirm casting details only when finalized.
The series, first announced in 2023, aims to explore the Harry Potter books more extensively than the original films, which included iconic portrayals by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon as Dumbledore. Set to premiere in 2026, the show’s pre-production is ongoing, and Warner Bros. has already launched casting calls for younger roles, including Harry, Hermione, and Ron. As fans eagerly await the series, HBO's strategy appears focused on delivering a fresh and in-depth adaptation.
