Adding yet another feather to an already feather-loaded cap, actor Yumna Zaidi's coming-of-age film Nayab won the Special Jury Diploma at the 30th Listapad International Film Festival in Minsk, Belarus.

Taking to her Instagram handle, Yumna shared a reel of the moment showing the ambassador of Pakistan in Belarus receiving the award on behalf of the country. "I am truly honoured to share this beautiful moment with you," penned Yumna in her caption.

As per Yumna's post, between three and four thousand applications were sent from 124 countries for consideration, marking the win as a milestone for Pakistani cinema on the global stage. Earlier in the year, Nayab had already gained recognition at the World Film Festival in Cannes, earning the titles of 'Best Foreign Film' and 'Best First-Time Filmmaker' in the feature film category.

Directed by Umair Nasir Ali, Nayab is a sports drama that ventures beyond the typical genre conventions, offering a nuanced exploration of the human spirit amidst the socio-economic challenges in Karachi. The film's narrative centres on a young cricket enthusiast named Nayab, portrayed by Yumna, who, despite facing familial opposition and societal constraints, strives to pursue her passion for cricket. Under the guidance of her elder brother, she finds a way to join a cricket camp, navigating the complexities of her aspirations against the backdrop of middle-class struggles. The film also sees Jawed Sheikh, M Fawad Khan, and Noreen Gulwani in prominent roles. Nayab was released in cinemas in Pakistan on January 26, and internationally on February 2.

Staying true to the coming-of-age trope, the empowerment-centric offering addresses universal themes of ambition, resilience, and familial bonds. Illuminating the delicate balance between shattered dreams and blossoming hopes, the film shines a light on Karachi and the cultural richness Pakistan has to offer. The recognition at a global level is a testament to the film's storytelling prowess and the dedication of its cast and crew.
