Trans people seek social inclusion, recognition
The khwaja sara community organised the second Transgender Festival 2024 at Frere Hall, which started with a rally from the Quaid-e-Azam House.
The festival brought together transgender individuals and members of civil society from all over the country, who enjoyed a variety of spicy and sweet dishes, while Dhamaal and dance performances were the main attraction at the event. Performers enthralled the audience through their art giving a message that trans people in the country are not behind in taking part in such activities.
An elevated stage for performers, decorated with colourful lights and strong sound system enhanced the charm of the festival.
The main aim of the festival was the recognition of transgender community at the social level, to raise voice for their rights and celebrate moments of happiness together.
Various plays and tableaus were also presented, which were meant to raise awareness about transgender people in society.
The members of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan expressed their views saying that in 2017, the existence of transgender community, officially recognised and declared in the 2018 legislation, was the result of their ongoing struggle.
Trans activist Bindiya Rana mentioned the undercounting of transgender individuals in the national census, pointing to the hundreds of transgender people attending the festival as evidence that their numbers are inaccurately presented. She expressed hope that soon transgender individuals would have representation in the Senate, National and provincial assemblies.
