Joe Biden breaks silence on Harris’ loss to Trump, praises her 'historic campaign'
Joe Biden has finally addressed the presidential election after Kamala Harris conceded her loss to Donald Trump, applauding her for a “historic campaign.”
The current president, who faced criticism for Harris’ surprising defeat to Trump, issued a statement commending his vice president's efforts.
“What America saw today was the Kamala Harris I know and deeply admire,” Biden wrote. “She’s been a tremendous partner and public servant full of integrity, courage, and character.”
Biden subtly referenced the “extraordinary circumstances” surrounding Harris’ entry into the race, which occurred after Biden’s poor performance in the debate against Trump led him to step down.
Critics of Biden argue that his delayed decision to leave the race and the absence of a Democratic primary choice harmed Harris’ chances.
“Under extraordinary circumstances,” Biden wrote, “she stepped up and led a historic campaign that embodied what’s possible when guided by a strong moral compass and a clear vision for a nation that is more free, more just, and full of more opportunities for all Americans.”
Biden stated that choosing Harris as his running mate in 2020 was the “best decision” he made as the Democratic nominee, and he predicted a strong political future for her.
“She will continue the fight with purpose, determination, and joy,” he wrote. “She will continue to be a champion for all Americans. Above all, she will continue to be a leader our children will look up to for generations to come as she puts her stamp on America’s future.”
Biden’s critics further contend that his low approval ratings and tendency for verbal missteps, especially given his close association with Harris, hindered her campaign. Harris’ team reportedly tried to distance itself from Biden in the days before the election, despite his attempts to support her campaign efforts.
