Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) MPA in the Sindh Assembly Muhammad Farooq has submitted a resolution demanding the withdrawal of an order to demolish over 1,100 shops in New Karachi's Sector 5-D. The resolution seeks an alternative location for the affected shopkeepers, many of whom are long-time residents of the area.
The resolution states that the shops are located along a drain near Shafiq Morr and 7000 Road in New Karachi. For decades, the shopkeepers have operated their businesses after allegedly paying money to officials for permission to set up shops on the site.
The resolution questions the role of concerned officials who, according to Farooq, allowed the shops to be established in the first place. It also raises concerns over why these businesses were permitted to operate for over 30 years without any action being taken earlier. Now, with the shopkeepers having made huge investments in their businesses, Farooq argues it is unjust to force them to vacate without offering any alternative.
The resolution stresses the need to provide these shopkeepers with alternate spaces in nearby markets managed by the KMC, many of which are currently occupied by drug addicts.
