F1 2025 driver shuffle: Bortoleto joins Sauber, Perez replacement rumors intensify at Red Bull
The 2025 Formula 1 grid is taking shape with major announcements and a single vacancy remaining. Sauber confirmed that Gabriel Bortoleto, the current Formula 2 leader and McLaren development driver, will join Nico Hülkenberg, replacing Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas. Sauber’s CEO Andreas Seidl praised Hülkenberg's speed and experience, calling him an “important part” of the team’s transformation ahead of its partnership with Audi in 2026. Bortoleto, widely viewed as a top emerging talent, secured a multi-year deal with Sauber, strengthening his foothold in F1.
Amid the changes, Red Bull faces uncertainty with Sergio Perez. Team Principal Christian Horner expressed doubt about Perez’s future, fueling speculation that Perez, despite his 2026 contract, could be replaced. Horner has reportedly shown interest in Franco Colapinto, who recently replaced Logan Sargeant at Williams and impressed at his debut. Horner’s recent meeting with Williams’ representatives sparked further rumors, as Williams boss James Vowles hinted at flexibility if Colapinto secures a race seat elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Ferrari will see a historic pairing, with Charles Leclerc and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton joining forces in 2025. Hamilton’s move from Mercedes to Ferrari has been confirmed, with both drivers signed for multi-year contracts. Mercedes responded to Hamilton’s departure by promoting 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli from Formula 2, whom Toto Wolff, Mercedes' team boss, described as “the future” of the team.
As confirmed line-ups solidify, Red Bull’s final decision on Perez’s seat remains a focus, along with possible contracts for Lawson or Colapinto. The finalized line-ups highlight a mix of experience and youth, setting up a competitive F1 season for 2025.
