Elite see cocaine as a status symbol: Sharjeel
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that drugs are a major challenge for our society at present. Unfortunately, drug trafficking is on the rise across the country, and drug use is becoming fashionable. Cocaine addiction is seen as a status symbol in elite society. Along with cocaine, marijuana, and heroin, the biggest challenges right now are ice and crystal variants of methamphetamine.
While discussing the attention notice in the Sindh Assembly, Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Narcotics Control Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that action against drugs is ongoing, and efforts to spread awareness are also in progress. It is encouraging that the Sindh Assembly passed the anti-narcotics bill by consensus.
He said that MPAs should identify narcotics dealers in their constituencies and we will take due action. "We should not let things pass. We must take a stand wherever there is wrongdoing."
He said that parents play the most important role in preventing drug abuse among children. "Parents should not turn a blind eye. It is primarily the responsibility of parents, followed by the managements of the schools and colleges, to immediately investigate any changes in a child's behaviour."
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Linjar has said that the law and order situation in Karachi has improved significantly due to the efforts of the Sindh government, and the city will soon be turned as a symbol of peace.
The provincial minister expressed these thoughts while answering various supplementary questions raised by MPAs in the Sindh Assembly House on Monday.
Sajjad Ahmed of Sunni Ittehad Council said that drugs are sold openly in Lyari and the police allegedly take money. Lanjar highlighted that the Sindh government unanimously passed the Narcotics Act and was actively fighting narcotics beyond police efforts alone. Home minister shared the increase in the drug seizures and cases against manufacturers and sellers of gutka and mawa.
