Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Nicky Jam announced he is retracting his endorsement of U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, citing recent offensive comments toward Puerto Rico and the Latino community as his reason.

In an Instagram video posted on Wednesday, Jam explained that while he initially supported Trump for his perceived economic policies, he has decided to “step away” from the endorsement due to “disrespect” shown to his heritage.

"The reason I supported Donald Trump is because I believed it was what’s best for the economy in the United States, where a lot of Latinos live," Jam stated in Spanish. He described his initial belief that Trump, as a businessman, could improve conditions for immigrants struggling with economic challenges.

The shift in stance reportedly came after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made derogatory remarks about Puerto Rico and Latinos during a Trump rally over the weekend, remarks that Jam viewed as disparaging to his home country. In response, Jam expressed his disappointment: “Never in my life did I think a comedian would appear to criticize and talk badly about my [Puerto Rico]. That’s why I’m renouncing my support for Donald Trump,” he shared.

Jam concluded by emphasizing Puerto Rico’s dignity, stating, "Puerto Rico deserves respect," and noted his intention to distance himself from political discussions altogether.
