Zico denies viewing leaked HYBE document amid report of controversial inclusion

Zico denies viewing leaked HYBE document, clarifies role amid K-pop industry controversy.

Amid public backlash surrounding a leaked HYBE “music industry report,” KOZ Entertainment CEO and artist Zico has denied accessing the document, which allegedly contained disparaging comments about K-pop idols and tactics for viral marketing against artists from other agencies, including SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and YG Entertainment.

Zico addressed the issue on Instagram, clarifying, “I have never seen the document in question, nor have I ever opened the email itself,” adding that he only discovered his inclusion as a recipient through recent media coverage.

The controversy began during the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee audit on October 24, where it was revealed that HYBE executives, under the direction of Chairman Bang Si Hyuk, received the extensive weekly report, spanning 18,000 pages over time. South Korean media outlet Hankyoreh obtained emails showing that Bang had specifically instructed that Zico be added to the recipient list as of January 2022.

However, Zico assured followers that he immediately sought verification from KOZ Entertainment, which confirmed he had not opened any emails or documents related to the report.

In his Instagram Story, Zico expressed disbelief, writing, “I can’t believe this is happening… I hope everyone who was worried can have a peaceful day today.” HYBE, which acquired KOZ Entertainment in 2020, has been at the center of the controversy. Following the backlash, HYBE CEO Lee Jae Sang issued a public apology, acknowledging the document’s content and its negative portrayal of various K-pop artists, while SEVENTEEN’s Seungkwan voiced his disappointment publicly via social media.
