At Town & Country’s Philanthropy Summit, Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay delved deeply into her journey toward self-compassion, vulnerability, and acceptance. Reflecting on her younger years, Hargitay shared how she once felt inadequate, often comparing herself to others and wishing for qualities she didn’t have.

Now, she recognizes that those moments took her away from valuing her own unique qualities and the "specialist" that each person inherently is. "I spent too much time wanting what others had, but we all bring something unique," she expressed, urging people to appreciate their own gifts rather than focusing on others'.

Vulnerability, she shared, has been a critical tool for her, both personally and professionally. Hargitay calls it her “superpower,” explaining that embracing openness has helped her foster stronger connections with others. She emphasized that patience and understanding are key, particularly when interacting with people who may seem closed off or unkind. Through experience, Hargitay has come to see that such behaviors often mask deeper insecurities or fears. “Everyone wants to feel seen,” she stated, suggesting that kindness and a willingness to look beyond surface behaviors can lead to more meaningful relationships.

Furthermore, Hargitay highlighted how identifying common ground with others is a powerful way to dissolve barriers, bridging divides through shared humanity. "When we break through unkindness by simply being human, it changes everything," she said, underscoring her belief in empathy as a path to unity. By focusing on these shared experiences, Hargitay believes people can connect on a deeper level, overcoming the illusion of fear and difference that often leads to disconnection and conflict.
