Bad Bunny responds to racist rally remarks with an Instagram video titled 'Garbage'

In a pointed response to recent rhetoric at Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally, Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny released a video on Instagram.

Addressing the event, following comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s derogatory comment labeling Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.” The artist, who recently endorsed Kamala Harris for president, posted an eight-minute video tribute to Puerto Rico captioned “garbage,” signaling his condemnation of the xenophobic commentary. Known for tackling social issues through his music and videos, Bad Bunny previously addressed Puerto Rico’s political landscape in his 2022 documentary-style music release, which highlighted corruption within the territory​.

Meanwhile, Trump has drawn further scrutiny for disseminating misinformation via various platforms, including Truth Social. According to The Washington Post, Trump and Senator JD Vance have invested in a network of platforms, such as Truth Social and Rumble, to broadcast far-right propaganda, with Rumble founder Chris Pavlovski maintaining close ties to the former president. The New York Times reports that Trump has also used Truth Social as a means to amplify conspiracy theories, which experts caution may intensify during the upcoming election​.

Compounding concerns over extremism, Stephen Crowder, a pro-insurrectionist streamer, announced a partnership with True The Vote to live-stream polling stations on Election Day. This partnership aligns with efforts to spread election fraud claims, similar to those propagated after the 2020 election. Additionally, a recent study reviewed by MSNBC suggests that Instagram’s algorithms can lead users from wellness-related content to far-right accounts, potentially exposing users to extremist ideologies
