Addressing a seminar on empowering women through land rights for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals organised on Tuesday at the Government College University Faisalabad, Dr Asia Saif Alvi, Chairperson of Political Science Department at University of Sargodha highlighted the interrelationship among women's right to land and property, their economic independence and the SDGs.
She emphasised that without ensuring women's rights to land and property, their economic independence is not possible; and without ensuring their economic independence, achieving the fifth SDG of Women Empowerment and Gender Equality will remain a dream.
She said that merely giving land and property rights to women will not empower them, but finance, credit and skill development programmes are very important elements in this regard.
Dr Muhammad Abrar Zahoor, Chairman of the Department of History and Pakistan Studies, University of Sargodha said depriving women of their rights to land and property in the society and creating obstacles in their progress and independence are indicative of denying their existence.
