Advanced surveillance of Punjab jails planned
In an effort to enhance security and transparency in Punjab's prison system, the provincial government has approved the installation of 9,200 high-tech surveillance cameras across 43 jails as part of the Safe Prisons Programme.
This initiative was reviewed in a high-level meeting led by Punjab Home Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal, who instructed the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) to complete a comprehensive survey of all prison facilities within a week.
The new security infrastructure will feature advanced eight-megapixel cameras, body cameras for on-ground staff, public address systems, access control systems, and panic buttons.
These upgrades will allow for extensive monitoring and quick-response mechanisms throughout prison complexes.
The system will leverage artificial intelligence for automated alerts on any unauthorized activities and will enable real-time tracking of both prisoners and prison staff.
The upgraded setup will also include facial and vehicle recognition technology, improving visitor management and bolstering security at entry points. High-profile and central jails will be prioritized in the first phase, per the Home Secretary's directives.
The PSCA will provide technical assistance throughout the project to ensure smooth implementation.
