Leopard kills livestock in Haripur

Wildlife department fails to take action as big cat attacks spike

HARIPUR:

A wild leopard pounced upon a citizen's cattle in Jandi Mohalla (Jabhi) area of Upper Khanpur, killing several goats and a bull and spreading fear among the local residents.

According to several reports, leopard attacks have been going on in these areas for the past several months. So far, a father and son have been injured and many cattle have been killed in previous attacks, however, no significant action has been taken by the Wildlife Department to tackle the issue.

Citizens in the area have been left deeply shaken by the attacks and the damage left in their wake. The affected people have demanded action from higher authorities.

Local residents have said that due to the scarcity of food in winter season, wild animals descend from nearby mountains to hunt in the residential areas and villages. Most of the attacks take place at night. However, even during the day, cattle fall prey to attacks as they are grazing in the mountains.

The wild animals, which include lions, leopards, bears and boars have eaten up citizens' livestock worth millions of rupees.

In light of the escalating situation, community leaders have urged the Wildlife Department to implement immediate measures to protect both residents and their livestock.

They called for increased patrols in the area and the establishment of a compensation fund for affected families.

Local activists are also advocating for better wildlife management strategies to address the root causes of these animal attacks, emphasising the need for a collaborative approach between wildlife authorities and the community to ensure safety for all.
