Capital to launch 'Smart Traffic Response Unit'

In response to frequent protests and traffic disruptions on VIP routes, Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi has announced the establishment of a Smart Traffic Response Unit (STRU).

This new unit will comprise five teams dedicated to maintaining smooth traffic flow and managing diversions during emergencies and law enforcement situations.

Chief Traffic Officer Muhammad Sarfraz Virk explained that the STRU will be actively engaged in providing timely traffic diversions on Islamabad's main highways during emergencies. Their responsibilities will include assisting citizens, disseminating travel information, and guiding drivers to alternative routes.

Additionally, the STRU will monitor lane violations and take legal action against drivers committing serious traffic offenses. The unit aims to enhance traffic management at commercial centres, educational institutions, and other busy areas during peak hours.

Virk emphasised that the STRU aligns with IGP's vision of ensuring safe and efficient travel for citizens. He urged residents to follow traffic rules, stating that compliance is essential for safety on the roads. The Islamabad police are committed to implementing measures that prioritise citizen convenience and security, he said.

He added the establishment of the STRU was part of a broader initiative to modernise traffic management in the capital. By utilising technology and data analytics, the unit aims to predict traffic patterns and respond proactively to potential congestion points.
