The gathering quickly drew a crowd of curious spectators, prompting New York City police to intervene and manage the group, with officers instructing attendees to disperse due to a lack of a formal permit. At least one individual was detained and issued a summons, according to police reports.

Despite the commotion, Chalamet’s sudden arrival captivated the crowd, as he greeted fans and posed alongside one of his potential doubles. “Once the dust settled, the contest’s organizer appeared to crown the winner adorned in the purple Wonka cape,” NBC New York reported.

Initially, some treated the event with skepticism, but The Gothamist later confirmed the event’s authenticity. One of the organizers explained they “didn’t want to ‘ruin the illusion’ of the event” by providing too much information.
