Liam Payne’s death triggers surge in One Direction and solo music streams

Following the tragic death of former One Direction star Liam Payne on October 16 in Buenos Aires, music streams for both his solo work and One Direction's catalog have skyrocketed.

According to Luminate, Payne’s solo material experienced an 858% increase in U.S. streams between October 16-19, with 3.3 million streams compared to 354,000 before his passing.

Globally, Payne’s music saw a 1,038% increase, with 13.4 million streams. One Direction’s catalog also saw a surge, with U.S. streams rising 675% to 62.9 million and global streams reaching 254 million, up 442% from the previous week.

The group's hit songs “Night Changes” and “Story of My Life” led the resurgence, re-entering global music charts. Payne’s top solo track “Strip That Down” saw a 593% jump in U.S. streams.
