Juul users receiving thousands in settlement from $300M lawsuit
Some Juul users are receiving thousands of dollars from a $300 million class action settlement, following lawsuits that accused Juul Labs and Altria of misleading consumers about the addictiveness and safety of their e-cigarettes.
In online forums, users are sharing screenshots of deposits ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars.
Juul agreed to a settlement in 2022, but Altria, which owns 35% of Juul, only settled earlier this year, enabling the payments. The total settlement covers 842,000 eligible claimants, with a portion of $202 million distributed after fees and taxes. Payouts are based on how many receipts users could provide as proof of purchase, but no average claim amount has been released yet.
Altria has denied the allegations, while Juul did not admit wrongdoing. A court has not ruled whether the companies violated laws. The settlement marks a significant development as e-cigarettes continue to face scrutiny in the U.S. "The claims have already been verified," according to a report by NBC News, as users share their compensation on social media platformse, the FDA rescinded a previous ruling that effectively banned Juul products, though they remain under review, awaiting more health data before a final decision on their sale can be made.
