Police Act amended
The provincial assembly has officially approved the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Police Amendment Bill 2024. Under this bill, the authority to appoint and transfer police officers of grade 18 and above will rest with the chief minister. The CM's directives on law and order will be mandatory for implementation under the changes.
Two members of the Safety Commission will be appointed as observers for the procurement of police equipment. The CM will also be kept informed of both general and special matters related to the police.
The provincial assembly also approved a bill canceling the regularisation of Transport Department employees, while five more bills related to various government departments were introduced. The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government had initially presented the Police Amendment Bill 2024 in the assembly on Wednesday.
After strong reservations from police officers, K-P Law Minister Aftab Alam submitted a motion on Monday to withdraw the bill, which was approved. Following this, Provincial Minister Akbar Ayub introduced the revised draft of the police bill, which was passed by the assembly.
