Andrew Garfield has expressed his deep gratitude to Jessica Chastain for helping him spend time with his mother, Lynn Garfield, before her death.

In an exclusive interview to PEOPLE, Garfield revealed that while filming The Eyes of Tammy Faye in 2019, Chastain and Searchlight Pictures rearranged the shooting schedule to allow him to be with his mother during her final days battling pancreatic cancer.

Garfield, 41, shared that he spent 10 days in England with his mother before she passed away at the age of 69.

Garfield reflected on the experience, recalling how their co-star Vincent D'Onofrio also encouraged him to prioritize family.

During filming, Garfield and Chastain formed a deep bond, which Garfield cherishes, especially as they conducted hands-on research for the film.

He spoke about the meaningful conversations they shared while visiting the now-closed Heritage USA, originally created by the evangelist couple portrayed in the film. Garfield describes the time as a profound and emotional chapter in his life.
