Pop star Lizzo faced backlash online after stating that if Vice President Kamala Harris is elected president, "the whole country will be like Detroit," during a rally for the Democratic candidate in her hometown.

Harris joined the Truth Hurts singer at a rally in Detroit on Saturday, where both praised the city. This came after former President Trump criticized it during an appearance at the Detroit Economic Club the previous week.

“I mean, the whole country is going to be like — you want to know the truth — it’ll be like Detroit… Our whole country will end up being like Detroit,” Lizzo remarked.

The singer echoed the former president’s comments but attempted to present them in a positive light.

“They say if Kamala Harris wins, the whole country will be like Detroit. Proud like Detroit. Resilient like Detroit,” Lizzo said, receiving cheers from the crowd.

Detroit was once a hub of American industry, particularly in car manufacturing, but has suffered a severe economic decline as jobs were outsourced and the country began importing more foreign vehicles.

Currently, Detroit has an unemployment rate of 8.8 percent, more than double the national average.

Social media users quickly criticized the Good as Hell singer’s remarks.

“Lizzo said, ‘If Kamala wins, the whole country will be like Detroit,’ as she spoke at Kamala's rally in Michigan. Does anyone else see a problem with that, or just me?” one user posted.

“My theory has been that Democrats know everything is about to collapse and they actually want Trump to win,” comedian David Angelo posted on X along with the video.
