Simon Cowell cancels Britain's Got Talent auditions after Liam Payne’s tragic death
Britain's Got Talent has cancelled its auditions following the death of Liam Payne at the age of 31. The singer tragically passed away on Wednesday after falling from his room at the Casa Sur Palmero Hotel in Buenos Aires.
Producers have not yet decided when the auditions will resume in light of this heartbreaking news.
A spokesman for Freemantle UK, the programme’s producer, said: “Due to the tragic passing of Liam Payne, we have decided to postpone the Britain’s Got Talent auditions. Our thoughts are with Liam’s friends, family and all who loved him.”
Simon Cowell, who famously formed One Direction, made the last-minute decision to cancel the auditions in Blackpool upon hearing the devastating news.
Simon, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and KSI were set to continue filming for BGT after starting auditions on Tuesday.
Amanda paid tribute to Liam on her social media, sharing an old photo of them together.
She wrote: "Such an awful tragedy. Sending love to his family and all those who loved him."
MailOnline has reached out to Simon Cowell’s representatives for a comment.
Liam died instantly after sustaining multiple injuries when he fell from a third-floor hotel balcony in Argentina.
He suffered a fractured skull, and emergency services were unable to save him at the scene.
Payne’s identity was confirmed by emergency services using his passport, though police have not yet determined the full circumstances of his fall.
Buenos Aires emergency services chief Alberto Crescenti told The Sun: "Our role was to head there quickly, give medical attention, and try to resuscitate him, but his injuries were incompatible with life.
"Based on what the team saw, there was apparently a cranial fracture and extremely serious injuries that led to his immediate death."
Payne had traveled to Argentina earlier this month with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, to attend ex-bandmate Niall Horan’s concert. Cassidy left two days prior, but Payne remained behind.
