Liam Payne displayed unusual behavior and needed to be escorted back to his hotel room before a fatal fall, with hotel staff frantically calling the police for help.

The 31-year-old former One Direction singer fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Palmero hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Reports indicate that Buenos Aires police were alerted by a hotel employee who mentioned dealing with "an aggressive man who may have been under the effects of drugs and alcohol."

Soon after, staff members heard a loud noise from the hotel courtyard, and Liam's body was discovered shortly after 5 p.m.

Local media reported that Liam was "acting erratically in the hotel lobby and smashed his laptop" before hotel staff "had to carry him back to his room."

According to an audio clip obtained from Buenos Aires' security ministry, police were urgently called by a hotel worker, requesting assistance for a guest who was reportedly intoxicated.

"When he is conscious he is destroying the entire room and we need you to send someone," said the worker.

Emergency medical services director Alberto Crescenti confirmed that Liam sustained "very serious injuries after falling from a third floor into an internal courtyard."

"We verified his identity using the passport he had," Crescenti added.

Crescenti told Argentine newspaper Clarin that "the team saw that he apparently had a fracture at the base of the skull."

Liam's body was taken to a local morgue, where an autopsy will be conducted.

Unconfirmed images have surfaced online, purportedly showing Liam's trashed hotel room, including a photo of a broken television screen.

Last night, emotional fans gathered outside the hotel, lighting candles and embracing one another in grief.

One woman was seen sitting on the sidewalk, her head resting on her knees.

The UK Foreign Office confirmed that it is in contact with Argentine authorities "regarding reports of the death of a British man."

TV host Dermot O'Leary expressed his sorrow, calling Liam's death the "worst news" while paying tribute to him.

"The worst news. I remember him as a 14-year-old turning up to audition on The X Factor, and blowing us away singing Sinatra. He just loved to sing.

"He was always a joy, had time for everyone, polite, grateful, and was always humble."
