Chilli market's closure spawns respiratory diseases in Naukot

The Naukot Chilli Market lies in ruins due to alleged mismanagement and official neglect.

KARACHI:

The Naukot Chilli Market, the once-thriving market in the Tharparkar district of Sindh, lies in ruins due to alleged mismanagement and official neglect. The consequences are far-reaching, with unchecked trading and adulteration of chilli now occurring in shops in the city centre.

This hazardous practice has implications for public health, particularly for vulnerable people. The constant exposure to red chilli pepper dust poses huge risks, especially for children and the elderly, who are prone to developing respiratory diseases, including asthma, and tuberculosis.

Tharparkar, like Rajasthan in the neighbouring country, was the hub of chilli trade. The then government had established the sprawling Naukot Chilli Market on November 3, 1981 to boost the revenue and communication of Naukot municipality. Initially, the market had only 17 shops and a central open space for drying and mixing chilli, known locally as "Khora."

The market thrived for decades. However, years of neglect and poor management have left the market spread over four acres in ruins. After that, chilli vendors relocated to the city centre, setting up shops to continue their trade. These makeshift establishments not only sell chilli but also conduct the essential process of blending and mixing chilli, locally known as "Khora", on the streets. The crushing of dried chillies to make powder releases fine particles of chilli dust in the air. Breathing chilli dust exposes people to serious respiratory ailments.
