Jemima Goldsmith urges for Imran Khan's release

Imran's ex-wife complains about the former prime minister's jail conditions.

Jemima Goldsmith has called for the release of Imran Khan, citing serious concerns over his health and treatment in solitary confinement.

In a statement on social media, Jemima said that her sons’ contact with their jailed father has been cut off, and claimed that Imran Khan is being denied basic rights, including family visits and legal representation.

According to Jemima, authorities have stopped Imran's weekly calls to his sons, Sulaiman and Kasim, since early September.

She also stated that the former prime minister is being held in isolation with the electricity to his cell turned off, and that his meals have been interrupted after the jail cook was sent on leave.

Jemima Goldsmith stressed that her appeal for Imran's release is not politically motivated, but rather focused on the wellbeing of her children and their father.

Jemima added that Imran's family, including his nephew Hassan Niazi and sisters Uzma and Aleema Khan, have also been targeted by authorities, with his sisters recently detained for attempting to join a demonstration.

Imran Khan has been in jail since August 2023 after being convicted in a corruption case. Since then, he was sentenced in various corruption cases. He was acquitted or granted bail on most of the cases.

However till recently he was allowed to speak to the media and meet with party leaders and relatives during court hearings. This privilege ended last week on security grounds after Adiala Jail suspended all visits to inmates until October 18.

This restriction includes meetings with high-profile prisoners including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founding leader Imran Khan.

'Khan sahab is in good health and even completed an hour of exercise'

Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali confirmed that medical professionals were finally granted access to Imran Khan at Adiala Jail.

The visit followed a decision by PTI to cancel a planned protest, which had been in dispute until the government allowed medical access to their party’s founder.

PTI had conditioned their withdrawal from the protest on ensuring Imran Khan received a thorough health check-up.

He further assured supporters, "By the grace of God, Khan sahab is in good health and even completed an hour of exercise today."

The barrister added that the medical reports would soon be made available and expressed gratitude to PTI supporters for their ongoing commitment.
