The captain returned to Dubai to lead her team following her father's recent death.

Pakistan’s women’s cricket team captain, Fatima Sana, became emotional during the national anthem prior to the T20 World Cup match against New Zealand in Dubai.

The 22-year-old captain, who hails from Karachi, had just lost her father, who passed away last Thursday.

Following his death and burial, she took the first available flight back to Karachi, only to return to Dubai to lead her team in the crucial match against New Zealand, according to Express news.

As the national anthem played, Fatima struggled to hold back tears, and videos of her emotional moment quickly went viral on social media.

Despite her inspiring presence, Pakistan lost the match, leading to the end of their hopes for a semi-final spot in the tournament.

The defeat also eliminated both the Indian and Pakistani teams from contention for the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals.

Fatima Sana's return to the squad after personal loss

Previously, Pakistan women's cricket team captain, Fatima Sana, had been devastated by the sudden loss of her father, who passed away due to a heart attack.

He had been 55 years old and was receiving treatment at a local hospital when the tragedy occurred.

His passing left a profound impact on Fatima, as he had always been a source of guidance and support throughout her cricketing journey.

After attending her father's funeral and spending time with her family, Fatima decided to prioritise her national duties.

She returned to Karachi ahead of Pakistan's third match against Australia, recognising the importance of being with her team during a pivotal time in the tournament.

Her commitment to her responsibilities as captain highlighted her dedication to the sport.

In a heartfelt statement before her departure for Dubai, Fatima reflected on her father's influence in her life, expressing her gratitude for his unwavering support.

"He played a significant role in shaping my career as a cricketer," she said, emphasising the deep bond they shared.

Fatima acknowledged that the shock of his death weighed heavily on her but felt that returning to the team was essential.
