Varsity celebrates Hangeul Day
The National University of Modern Languages (NUML) marked the 578th Hangeul Day with a grand celebration, highlighting the creation of the Korean alphabet and the growing cultural and educational connections between Pakistan and South Korea.
Hangeul Day, observed on October 9, commemorates the creation of the Korean script by King Sejong in 1443. Organised by NUML's Department of Korean Language and Culture, along with the King Sejong Institute and the Seed Program for Korean Studies, the event brought together students, faculty, and members of both nations' communities.
NUML Director General Shahzad Munir and Secretary of the Korean Embassy, Jee Eun Seok, were among the distinguished guests. Munir emphasized Korea's rapid progress in education and technology, while Seok praised NUML for fostering interest in Korean studies, noting the rise in student enrolment.
In his remarks, Munir emphasised the historical and evolving ties between the two nations. He noted that the Korean language, which has now spanned 578 years, is among the world's most influential languages, driven by Korea's cultural wave and technological advancements. He also highlighted the significant global rise of East Asian countries, stating, "The future belongs to education and technology. Korea's success in fields like technology, where Samsung has surpassed Apple, and the booming automobile industry, are examples of their progress."
He also recalled the commitment made by the Korean Ambassador during his last visit to provide 100% scholarships to NUML students, expressing gratitude for this generous support. He added, "NUML is proud to be at the forefront of fostering international understanding through language and culture. Hangeul Day is a testament to our commitment to broadening our students' horizons."
Jee Eun Seok, Secretary of the Korean Embassy, delivered the message of the Korean Ambassador to Pakistan, Park Ki Jun.
Speaking on the occasion, Seok underscored the importance of Hangeul Day and its historical significance, highlighting King Sejong the Great's role in developing the Korean script. He praised NUML's efforts in promoting the Korean language, noting that the number of students learning Korean is increasing, thanks to NUML's dedicated programmes.
A short documentary was also screened, giving the audience a glimpse into the history and significance of the Hangeul script, which developed as a national treasure under King Sejong.
The event also featured captivating cultural performances, including a vibrant Korean Fan Dance, symbolising Korea's rich heritage, and a thrilling Taekwondo demonstration by NUML students, showcasing their skills in the iconic Korean martial arts.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the Korean Calligraphy Competition, with NUML students demonstrating their skills and artistry. Moreover, the celebration of Hangeul Day at NUML underscores the university's dedication to promoting cultural diversity and strengthening Pakistan-Korea relations.
