Protest erupts over 'custodial death'
SHAKAR GARH: A large crowd of family members and local citizens staged a protest, blocking the road with the body of Zeeshan Qaiser, an arrested suspect, while chanting slogans against police brutality.
Zeeshan was arrested by the police at Zafarwal station three days ago, and his family claims he died due to severe police torture while in custody.
Zeeshan's uncle shared that he repeatedly questioned the police about the reason for his nephew's arrest, but received no clear answers.
He further alleged that the officers demanded a bribe of Rs500,000 for Zeeshan's release, a sum the family could not afford. The uncle claimed that Zeeshan's death was the direct result of torture inflicted by the police.
The police, however, deny the torture allegations, stating that Zeeshan suffered a heart attack. According to the police's version, Zeeshan's condition worsened overnight, and he was transferred to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital where he received emergency treatment.
Despite efforts, Zeeshan's condition deteriorated further, and he was unable to survive.
In response, the family placed Zeeshan's body on the road, demanding immediate legal action against the officers involved in the arrest.
The protestors called on the chief minister and the Inspector General of Punjab to take immediate notice and ensure justice is served.
