Toyota Motor Corp. is reportedly shifting away from DEI initiatives and pro-LGBTQ events following recent online backlash, according to a new report.

Bloomberg reported that the company sent a memo to its US employees last week, stating it will “narrow community activities to align with STEM education and workforce readiness” and will no longer participate in the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index.

A week before, anti-woke activist and filmmaker Robby Starbuck highlighted several progressive initiatives within Toyota, including financial support for groups opposing laws that ban gender transition treatments for minors, establishing Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) based on race and gender orientation, and sponsoring a drag queen program at a children’s summer camp.

Starbuck praised Toyota for its decision on Thursday and shared additional excerpts from the memo.

In its message to employees, Toyota reportedly said that while it will continue to “encourage an inclusive environment where diversity of thought can flourish,” the company will primarily focus on activities that support business growth.

“We will work to ensure that the activities and events are focused on professional development, networking, mentoring and volunteering — team member engagement that drives our business. Furthermore, we will work to ensure all company activities are aligned with our values and create an inclusive environment for our team members,” the memo reportedly stated.
