Viral TikTok buried rug found by Katie Santry in backyard investigated by Columbus police

Columbus police have closed their investigation into a viral TikTok video of a buried rug found in the backyard.

Columbus police concluded their investigation into a viral TikTok video that claimed a body might be buried in an east Columbus yard. The video, posted by Katie Santry, showed her and her family discovering a buried rug, which led to an extensive police response, including K-9 units and excavation efforts. The investigation wrapped up on October 3, 2024, with police confirming that no human or animal remains were found on the property.

Santry’s videos documenting the incident amassed millions of views, with viewers urging her to involve the police. She shared how two officers initially declined to investigate further, but the situation escalated after she posted updates showing cadaver dogs responding to the site. According to Columbus police, the rug was tested, and "the pieces all tested negative for human or animal remains, and at this time, there are no plans for further testing."

Neighbor Gregory Napier, who has lived in the area for over 20 years, expressed his concerns about the sudden influx of attention to the neighborhood. “It’s disturbing and alarming because it caught me by surprise,” Napier told reporters. Despite the viral nature of the TikTok posts, the investigation found no evidence of foul play, and the police have closed the case.
