KARACHI:

In a significant blow to moviegoers in Karachi, Atrium Cinemas has confirmed its closure due to persistent financial losses. Nadeem Mandviwalla, CEO of Mandviwalla Entertainment, stated that the business is unlikely to resume operations in the foreseeable future.

Speaking with The Express Tribune, Mandviwalla expressed the severity of the situation, noting, "No idea when it will open again." He elaborated, saying the cinema, "closed due to low business" and that "losses are less if you keep it closed than if you keep it running."

As per Mandviwalla, the cinema has been inoperational for two months. Social media users have also noted the official announcement on the Atrium Cinemas website, which reads: "To our valuable patrons, Atrium Cinemas will remain closed till further notice." The statement highlights the uncertainty surrounding the beloved cinema's future, leaving many patrons wondering when, or if, they will be able to enjoy the latest films there again.

In contrast, Mandviwalla pointed out that the Centaurus Cineplex in Islamabad continues to operate successfully, suggesting that regional differences in business performance may have contributed to Atrium's struggles. "Centaurus Cineplex Islamabad is running as that's doing fine," he remarked, indicating the complexities of managing cinema operations in varying market conditions.

Last month, Mandviwalla announced that the Pakistani blockbuster The Legend of Maula Jatt was set to hit Indian theatres on October 2 in a limited release to the Punjab region. Expressing optimism about the film's potential success, he noted that its absence from OTT platforms might work in its favour. "It might take a little time as the film is releasing after two years and the excitement is no longer there as it was in 2022," he said. "However, the word of mouth of the film is bound to create that excitement again."

Despite initial announcements, Hindustan Times confirmed earlier this week that Maula Jatt will not release in India due to backlash from right-wing factions over religious and political concerns.
