Jason Anderson to join England's Test squad on day two of the first Test

England’s fast bowling coach, James Anderson, will miss the national team’s tour of Pakistan as he competes in Scotland’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which ends on October 6. Anderson is expected to rejoin the squad by the second day of the Test match against Pakistan.

Although physically absent, the 42-year-old former cricketer remains in touch with the team, offering advice and guidance through WhatsApp. Since retiring from international cricket in July, Anderson has taken on a mentoring role for England’s fast bowlers, following up on his impressive performance during the 2022 Pakistan tour, where he took eight wickets in two Tests.

The bowling unit faces significant challenges, as two standout performers from the last series, Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson, will not feature in the current lineup. Wood is unavailable due to injury, while Robinson has not been selected. In their place, England will field a fast bowling attack comprising Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts, Ollie Stone, and Chris Woakes.

Notably, Woakes will be making his first Test appearance in Asia since 2016, while the other four bowlers are relatively inexperienced in overseas Test matches, raising concerns about the team's bowling depth under pressure. Adding to the complications, Ollie Stone is set to depart on the fifth day of the match to prepare for his wedding next week.

It is worth noting that the three-match re-ball format series between Pakistan and England is set to begin on October 7th in Multan. The national team aims to make a positive comeback following a disappointing 2-0 whitewash against Bangladesh.
