Floods 2011: No need for foreign aid, says Nawaz

Reacting to PM Gilani's appeal to foreign agencies for flood relief, Sharif said Pakistan could handle the disaster.

HYDERABAD:
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif said on Sunday that the government should use its own resources to cope with this year's floods instead of relying on foreign help.

He called upon the government to declare Sindh districts calamity-hit areas and devise a strategy for the rehabilitation of the flood victims as a top priority.

Nawaz Sharif was addressing a press conference at the Magsi House in Hyderabad after visiting the flood-hit areas in Sindh.

Reacting to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani's appeal to the foreign agencies to help, Nawaz Sharif stressed that government resources were adequate and there was no need for seeking help from foreign countries.

He said that the government should address the problems of victims promptly.

The PML-N chief lamented that the government had not made prior arrangements to deal with the crisis since the MET office predicted a flood.

Torrential monsoon rains have pounded southern Pakistan, triggering serious floods that have affected more than five million people.

The disaster has reportedly taken 199 lives and destroyed or damaged nearly one million houses, and flooded 4.2 million acres of land. This has prompted the government to call for support from the United Nations.
